Who Invented the Airplane?
Looking back at the history of aviation, who do you think made the first successful attempt? Who invented the airplane? Or was it an extended effort?
Humans have been fascinated by flying in the sky since the dawn of time, countless drawings, engravings and ruins that clearly show this fascination. But who took this fascination to the next level? Who decided to take this dream to the big skies and invent the first airplane?
Let's take a journey through the history of aviation and learn who invented the airplane.
Lighter than air
1. Francesco Lana de Terzi published a theory in 1670 that suggested the use of copper foil spheres containing a vacuum for lighter than airlift. Such a sphere would be lighter than the surrounding air, enough to lift an airship.
While good in theory, unfortunately, his design was not practical because the surrounding air pressure would have crushed the spheres if there was nothing but a void between them.
This theory, known as the vacuum airship, remains an unlikely dream with any current materials. However, we cannot ignore Terzi's efforts when discussing who invented the airplane.
the balloon
2. Hydrogen gas was discovered in the 18th century, finally a substance lighter than air! This led to the invention of the hydrogen balloon. The Montgolfier brothers pioneered the manned flight of hot-air balloons at the time.
On November 21, 1783, Montgolfiers launched the first free flight with human passengers. The balloon was powered by wood fire. It flowed up to 8 km.
The use of balloons for military purposes began in the late 18th century. During that era, the French government established the balloon company.
Various theories of mechanics, especially fluid dynamics and Newton's laws of motion, at the same time formed the basis of modern aerodynamics.
Airship or dirigible balloon
3. Work on a steerable or dirigible balloon continued throughout the 19th century. The first human, controlled, sustained flight took place in 1852 when Henry Giffard flew 24 kilometers in France using a steam engine powered craft.
Although airships or dirigibles were used in World War I and II and are still used today, even on a very limited basis, their development has been overtaken by heavier aircraft than airplanes.
Sir George Kelly is the father of airplanes
4. Cayley first identified four forces that affect an airplane: thrust, lift, drag, and weight. He was the first to design a heavier-than-airplane, and he focused on stability and control in his designs.
He designed a manned glider or "governable parachute" capable of being launched from mountaintops. This glider carried the first aviator across Brompton Dale in 1853.
The Wright Brothers
5. With impressive determination, the Wright brothers methodically worked their way through gliders and the first airplanes. The Wrights made the first sustained, controlled, heavier-than-air powered flight on December 17, 1903.
Their first aircraft was unstable and unreliable, but the brothers did not give up, building the Flyer 2 and Flyer 3. Flyer III became the first practical aircraft in history to fly steadily under full control, rescue its pilot and land safely.
Revolutionary development
6. After a rough start, aviation improves by leaps and bounds. Aircraft were put to military use almost immediately, resulting in impressive growth in a short period of time.
The era between World War I and World War II witnessed an amazing advancement in aviation technology. Airplanes began to evolve from low-powered biplanes made of wood and fabric to sleek, high-powered monoplanes made of aluminum at that time.
The development may have started for military reasons, but commercial aviation has certainly benefited from impressive advances. Aviation is now considered the best mode of commercial transportation, due to its speed and ease of movement, but it did not happen overnight.
Revolutionary development
A revolutionary development took place between World War I and World War II, years after the first aviation became an important element of success and a tool of warfare on the battlefield and in war, and aviation became more common during this period. Experienced, and large numbers of pilots found themselves out of action between World War I and World War II, which opened the way for commercial aviation and led to the establishment of armed air forces in most countries during this period and led to civilian development. Aviation
After the end of World War II, a large number of pilots and aircraft were put out of service and from here commercial and civil aviation started and aviation was used without a clear vision, which prompted military aviation to develop airplanes and jet engines. . Aircraft retired from the war were used in commercial services and transporting people and goods, and airlines expanded and multiplied around the world.
After World War II, the United States began investing in production plans capable of producing competitively priced commercial aircraft that allowed passenger use.
